Halloween candy is a highlight for kids, but for parents, it can spell disaster for carpets, clothes, and furniture. Chocolate melts, gummies stick like glue, and brightly colored candy can leave behind stubborn stains. Here’s how to fight back against every type of candy mess.
Chocolate Stains
On carpets and upholstery: Scrape off excess chocolate carefully with a spoon, then blot with cold water. Use a mild dish soap solution and blot again—never rub, or you’ll push it deeper.
On clothing: Rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric, then wash as usual. Avoid hot water—it sets the stain.
Gummy Candies
Freeze first: If a gummy is stuck to fabric or carpet, place an ice cube on top. Once hardened, scrape it off.
Clean residue: Use warm, soapy water to scrub away stickiness. For stubborn patches, try a vinegar-and-water solution.
Hard Candy
Dissolve with heat: Place a warm, damp cloth over the candy until it softens, then wipe clean. For carpets, follow with a vacuum to collect leftover sugar.
Bright Candy Dyes
Blot, don’t rub: Dyes spread easily, so dab with a clean cloth. Use vinegar, baking soda paste, or hydrogen peroxide (for whites only) to lift stubborn color stains.
Prevention Tip
Create a “candy zone” where kids can eat treats—like the kitchen table—so messes don’t spread throughout the house.
Candy stains may be scary, but they’re not permanent. With the right techniques, you’ll keep your home sweet—not sticky!
